African dance and drum reduce stress and anxiety, build self-esteem, and assist with weight loss. This energy-filled class provides an opportunity to experience West African culture through learning traditional dance movements accompanied by live music, using traditional drums (djembe, djun-dun).
Each class starts with a warmup. Then participants are given the history, background, and name of the dance being taught. You'll also learn where it comes from, what groups of people are known for that dance, and why it was done.
You'll go through a breakdown of dance movements to build a complete choreography. Then you'll learn how to travel down the floor with the movements that you have learned. This helps to build core strength and stability. The class ends with a cool-down stretch.
This class will help you improve stamina and build strength while burning lots of calories. It is an exciting, fun way to get a taste of traditional West African culture, history, and dance in your own backyard.
